Camper Van Second Battery Installation – How It Works

We perform a fixed pre-installation in the vehicle, which is simply a cable passed from the positive terminal of the main car battery to the rear trunk area of the van. This cable runs inside the trim panels, meaning it is not accessible or visible. Normally, we only pass the positive cable; the negative is connected directly to the vehicle ground.

(Important note: In many cases, we can also ship this pre-installation to your home. Since it's only a matter of running one cable, any trusted mechanic can do it, and some of our customers have even completed it themselves with our phone assistance. However, if you are not experienced, we recommend leaving it to your local mechanic or visiting our workshop so we can handle it for you.)

The rest of the installation is done inside one of the compartments of our Camper Furniture Kits, with an accessible inspection lid. This means the installation is removable and road-legal, as it can be easily disconnected and removed along with the furniture.

When the Camper Furniture Kit is removed, there is no wiring or battery left in the vehicle. Even if you attend a road inspection with the kit and battery installed, it is usually accepted since most second battery setups do not require any official modification, especially when installed in the trunk area inside a removable unit.

Second battery installations can be done:

  • Inside the Camper Furniture Kit (the most common and recommended option).

  • In independent boxes (smaller or larger sizes). Some of these boxes can even be built larger to double as a bench seat.

We offer two main configurations for the second battery system:

  1. Charging via the vehicle alternator (standard setup).

  2. Charging via solar panels – either a fixed roof panel or a portable solar panel.
